The Ever Changing World Of e-liquid
We have seen countless changes when it comes to vaping. Everything from the equipment, batteries and yes, even the e-liquids. Whatever you prefer to name it, Vape juice, e-liquid, vape liquid, e-juice, there can be no doubt that it is the thing that keeps us all wild about vaping. Even sitting here now thinking about all of those delectable flavours, my mouth is watering. The wide choice of nicotine levels, and the advancement of high VG e-liquids which create competition grade clouds. Whatever your particular preference, you are sure to find an e-liquid to suit your taste and vaping style at Medusa Juice.
This will probably surprise you as it did me. Most of us wouldn’t have realized that e-liquid, in its most rudimentary form, dates as far back as the 1960s. Honestly! Sometimes the advancements we make amaze me, but that just seems insane, having e-liquid around that long before anyone really did anything with it.
We know that on 17th April 1963, Herbert A. Gilbert, a young business graduate from Pennsylvania, filed a patent for the world’s first electronic cigarette. He used a battery powered heat source, and flavoured water, to create a smokeless non-tobacco based e-cig. That still boggles my mind!
Unfortunately, Mr Gilbert was far ahead of his time, and his patent expired before he could realise commercial success. You may recall that tobacco companies were known to heavily advertise their cigarettes as sexy, pleasurable objects that were endorsed by doctors and loved by the ladies! Yes, for some of you younger people out there, that might come as a shock, but it is true and I even remember some of the old jingles! In those days, nobody recognised the need for an alternative. This is important to keep in mind too, his version of e-Liquid contained no nicotine.
Let The Vaping Begin
Let’s move forward to the year 1979, when a Doctor by the name of Norman Jacobson worked together with a computing genius called Philip Ray to find a vehicle to deliver nicotine to the bloodstream, via the lungs, but eliminated the other toxic ingredients found in cigarettes.
At the end of their experimentation, the final device of this pair of pioneers was not electronic at all. And while it did closely resemble a cigarette, there was no heat. Essentially, it was a cartridge containing paper soaked in nicotine which was placed inside a cigarette-like tube. Users would inhale to release the nicotine from the cartridge.
It did not have any flavour and, because there was no heat, there was also no vapour. Therefore, for all intents and purposes, it wasn’t an e-liquid and yet this is the first record that we have of the word vaping being used to describe the process. So, there again we can see how far this evolution has taken us and continues to.
When questioned about this invention, Dr Jacobson had this to say: “To simplify description, we will hereafter refer to nicotine vapour inhalation through a [non-combustible cigarette] as vaping and people who inhale nicotine vapour as vapers.”
So, between then and the early 2000s, various tobacco companies have worked to create a ‘safe’ version of the cigarette. With little luck, if we are being honest. The sticking point always seemed to come when they were considering how to market the product. Which makes sense when you realise that none of them were willing to publicly admit that normal cigarettes were ‘unsafe’. Thus, over the years, we ended up with a slew of nicotine replacement vehicles which bore no resemblance to cigarettes; such as gum and patches. I’m still amazed that these worked for anyone to be honest. But whatever works to get you off of the evil cigarettes!
A Pharmacist Does It!
In the early 2000s, along came a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik. Hon was using these nicotine therapies to quit smoking. Because the habit was killing his father, he wanted to created something that would free others from such a fate. He realised that the only satisfactory way to satisfy his nicotine cravings was indeed smoking, and set about inventing a safer version.
The real breakthrough moment came in 2003, when he had the idea of using ultrasound to vaporise a nicotine solution in a device that looked like a traditional cigarette. This initial process of Hon Lik’s created droplets which were far too large to create a smoke-like vapour. Mr Lik added resistance heating which soon proved more successful.
Because he was a pharmacist his skillset were perfect to test the liquids and create the right vapour. His lengthy experimentation process eventually led him to propylene glycol. This is the PG that we still find in our vape juice today.
PG had many important advantages. For one thing, it holds nicotine well. It also creates vapour when heated, it is odourless and flavourless so can have any flavour added. And don’t forget that it has low viscosity, so can easily be absorbed by the wick. Finally, it was already approved by the FDA as suitable for use in food and pharmaceuticals. Which as you can imagine, was a huge part of the battle won.
Throw Some VG In
Eventually, it was found that vegetable glycerine (VG) which was equally effective as PG, but with the added advantage that it is hypoallergenic came along. Being hypoallergenic means that it doesn’t cause any adverse effects in people with PG sensitivity. Also, because the VG is thicker than PG, it creates more impressive vape clouds. Which if you’re into competing, if crucial. The great thing too is that they still smell fabulous.
However, there is a down side, if you will. The more viscous quality means that users get less of a throat hit, which is the thing that most closely replicates smoking a cigarette. Since this discovery, manufacturers and vapers alike have been experimenting with various combinations of VG and PG to get the perfect balance of hit on the inhale, and vapour plumes on the exhale. If you’re struggling with finding the right juice for you, or have any questions or concerns, stop in or phone one of the Medusa Juice Vape Shops. There are four convenient locations and we are here to help you however we can.
As I mentioned earlier, there are few industries which have seen an evolution rate at the pace of the vaping industry. These days, we prefer high VG e liquid and have produced e-juice that contains nicotine salts rather than freebase nicotine. Another important safety measure. We can buy ‘fizzy’ vape juice which resembles sherbet on the palette. We have started to ‘shake and vape’ using short fill, nicotine free vape liquid and nic shots to avoid the unnecessary waste associated with buying multiple 10ml bottles. Another great feature and there are some of us vapers who even make our own DIY vape juice. We buy flavourless e-liquid and create our own flavours. Which can be fun and interesting to say the very least.
Whatever your particular vape juice style, Medusa Juice has something to suit it. Regardless of if it is fizzy or menthol, high nicotine or nic free, high VG or high PG, there is plenty of great flavours here at Medusa Juice that every vaper is can take advantage of.
If you’re like me, you can’t help but be grateful for those early pioneers who persevered and brought us all the vaping experience that we enjoy today.
