Holding On

“Hold My Light” is a campaign aimed at helping people quit smoking . The campaign was recently launched by Philip Morris, one of the largest producers and marketers of tobacco products in the world.
Similar to Public Health England Stoptober Campaign, Hold My Light encourages smokers to give up cigarettes for thirty days. Research shows that people are five times more likely to give up smoking for good after successfully quitting for one month.
The Hold My Light campaign also focuses on support and motivation through its website. Smokers are invited to sign up and invite their friends, creating a support network and a place where they can share their experiences and advice.
Hold My Light promotes a variety of products to help smokers successfully quit for thirty days. Encouragingly, vaping is one of the methods that the campaign recommends as a way to help people give up cigarettes.

Quitting

Smoking is regarded as the largest, preventable cause of death in the world. Smoking produces thousands of chemicals which have a strong connection to cancer as well as heart disease and lung disease. Around half of smokers will die as a result of smoking and about ten percent of the people who die from smoking related illness are the victims of second hand smoke.
Nicotine is highly addictive and giving up smoking can be incredibly difficult. There are a lot of products available to help people quit as well as support and advice from organisations like the NHS. Visit NHS smoke free for more information.

Nicotine replacement therapies

Nicotine replacement therapies are one of the ways that the Hold My Light campaign encourages smokers to give up cigarettes.
There are a variety of nicotine replacement products available, including patches, gum and nasal spray and they can be brought from most chemists and supermarkets. These products work by supplying nicotine to the body, satisfying the cravings that can make giving up cigarettes so difficult.

Vaping

Vaping products are another form of nicotine replacement therapy that the Hold My Light campaign recommends. E-cigarettes have been proven to almost double the chances of smokers quitting for good and so far thousands of smokers each year have given up cigarettes with the help of vaping.
Like other nicotine replacement therapies, vaping helps satisfy the nicotine cravings that make giving up smoking so difficult, but it also helps recreate the familiar feel of cigarettes. The similar hand-to-mouth action, throat hit and clouds of vapour can make a big difference for many of us when trying to quit.
A lot of research has been done into the effects of vaping and the results show that vaping is significantly safer than smoking. Medical organisations like the NHS and Public Health England have supported these results, saying that vaping is around 95% safer than smoking.

Vaping VS. Heated Tobacco

Heated Tobacco

Heated tobacco is the final product promoted by the Hold My Light campaign.

Heated tobacco, sometimes known as heat-not-burn tobacco, is a product that heats tobacco to a lower temperature than burning a cigarette. Heating tobacco like this creates vapour containing nicotine and some of the flavour of tobacco but less of the chemicals usually found in cigarette smoke.
Heated Tobacco Products have been around for decades but have not been very successful in the UK or America. The tobacco industry originally claimed that heated tobacco was far less harmful than smoking and that it does a better job of recreating the cigarette experience.
Independent research has shown that heated tobacco products are more harmful than originally claimed. The evidence so far suggests that heated tobacco produces around fifty to ninety percent less harmful chemicals than smoking a cigarette. This makes heated tobacco significantly more harmful than vaping.
The other big selling point of heated tobacco was that it produces an experience that’s closer to smoking a cigarettes. While this may have been true back when they were first introduced, new developments in vaping mean that e-cigarettes can also produce an experience that’s closer to a tobacco cigarette but with less health risks than heated tobacco.

Criticism Campaign

Unsurprisingly, this stop smoking campaign from a major tobacco company has received a lot of criticism in the short time since it was launched.
Some have labelled the campaign a publicity stunt while others have called it hypocrisy. Whatever the reasoning behind the campaign, there is truth in the message that smoking is dangerous and that smokers would be better off quitting.
It’s also encouraging that vaping is being promoted as one of the ways to help smokers quit for good.

Despite the criticism, there are some positive points to be taken from the Hold My Light campaign.
Tobacco products like cigarettes are addictive and harmful with smokers dying on average ten years sooner than non-smokers. Around half of smokers will die from smoking related illness and in the UK alone around one hundred thousand people die each year as a result of smoking.
Quitting smoking reduces the risk of dying from smoking related illness and improves life expectancy. Encouraging smokers to quit is a good thing and the Hold My Light campaign offers some useful advice to help smokers give up cigarettes.
Smokers who’ve quit smoking for thirty days have been shown to be five times more likely to successfully give up cigarettes for good. There is also a lot of useful information and support groups available through the NHS smokefree website and the NHS Stop Smoking Service.
Possibly the most encouraging aspect of Hold My Light is the fact that vaping is on the list of recommended nicotine replacement therapies. Vaping has been proven to almost double the chances of smokers giving up cigarettes for good and organisations like Public Health England and the NHS have already supported the use of vaping to help quit smoking. Now Philip Morris is also recommending vaping so hopefully this will mean more people turning to e-cigarettes to help them give up deadly tobacco products.
