Research suggests that roughly a third of medical professionals in the United Kingdom would not recommend vaping as an aid to quit smoking. Around a quarter of medical professionals were unsure if vaping was safer than smoking and more than half reported that they didn’t know enough about vaping to make recommendations.
This research was carried out by Oxford Brookes University and presented at the National Cancer Research Institute Conference (NCRIC). The survey involved over five hundred medical professionals and the results show that there is a surprising lack of awareness among some doctors.
This research is worrying as there is already a lot of evidence showing that vaping is significantly safer than smoking. Vaping has also been proven to almost double the chances of people giving up tobacco products for good. These findings are supported by Public Health England, the Royal College of Physicians and are reflected in the United Kingdom’s health policy.
Smoking is regarded as the largest, preventable form of death in the world and misinformation about vaping could make it harder for smokers who want to quit. So, why are so many doctors ill-informed about vaping and what can be done to improve the situation?

Vaping Vs Smoking

The biggest reason why people take up vaping is to help them quit smoking and get away from the harmful effects of tobacco products. Around half of smokers will die as a result of smoking related illnesses like cancer, heart disease and lung disease. In the United Kingdom alone about one hundred thousand people die each year because of smoking and around ten thousand of those are victims of second hand smoke.
Vaping has been shown to almost double the chances of smokers successfully quitting tobacco products for good. Research has also shown that vaping is around ninety-five percent safer than smoking. Medical organisations like Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians have supported these findings.

Supporting vaping as an aid to giving up smoking can have a huge impact on the health of the nation and has the potential to save lives.
The report by Oxford Brookes University recommends training and the promotion of better awareness among local health organisations. Hopefully this training will help prevent barriers that could make it harder for smokers to quit.
