And the area around Bideford is where Hubba the Dane attacked Devon during the 9th century before his forces were repelled.
The town grew over time and in the 13th century Bideford received a charter from King Richard V to create the town’s first council. The Grenville family were the lords of the manor of Bideford for centuries and contributed to the town’s development. Sir Richard Grenville was a sea captain and specialised in tobacco importation. Grenville’s ship captured a Spanish galleon in 1585 and he also brought a Native American from Roanoke Island to Bideford the following year.
During the English Civil War Bideford was Parliamentarian. The town stood against the Royalist forces. The Parliamentarians were besieged in Bideford and its two fortresses after a series of Royalist victories in the South West. With no hope of reinforcements, the town’s defences were eventually overwhelmed and Bideford fell to the Royalists.
Plague killed over two hundred people in Bideford during the 17th century. Later that century Protestant French immigrants, forced out of France, brought new trades to Bideford, including silk and weaving.
Sir John Granville, Richard Grenville’s great-grandson, helped restore King Charles II to the throne. In 1661 King Charles gave Sir John Granville the title Baron Granville of Bideford and Earl of Bath.
Bideford remained an important trading town serving passenger and cargo ships. In the 19th century almost three thousand people emigrated to Canada and the United States from ships leaving Bideford.
During World War II Bideford was home to American soldiers who arrived at Bowden Green Camp during the build up to the D-Day landings. Bideford was also home to an Auxiliary Unit, the secret guerrilla forces tasked with fighting back in the event of a successful German invasion.
