All about the town
The town’s name is believed to derive from the Old English “Briocham” meaning Brioc’s village. There have been inhabitants in the area for centuries, with evidence of Bronze age and Ice age populations. But the town we know today was probably founded between the 6th and 9th centuries.
During the Middle Ages, Brixham became the largest fishing port in the South West of England and fishing remains one of the main industries to the present day. Known as the ‘Mother of Deep-Sea Fisheries’ Brixham was home to around three hundred fishing boats in the 19th century.
The waters around Brixham have always been treacherous and hundreds of ships have been wrecked near the harbour. The terrible storm in 1866 was by far the worst incident as fishing boats struggled with darkness, gale force winds and the local beacon being destroyed. In the end fifty vessels were destroyed and over a hundred men lost their lives to the storm.
Piracy and smuggling have been very profitable criminal activity throughout Brixham’s history with numerous gangs transporting illegal goods and evading the Revenue men. There are a variety of local legends about the characters involved and the often humorous ways they carried out their trade and eluded the authorities.
From the end of the 18th century there were iron mines operating around Brixham and the industry remained an important part of the town’s economy for over a hundred years.
Brixham has been home to a number of important political and military events throughout its history. The town watched as Sir Francis Drake attacked the Spanish Armada in 1588 and today visitors can see a full sized replica of Drake’s Golden Hind in Brixham harbour. William Prince of Orange, the future King William III, landed in Brixham in the 17th century, during the Glorious Revolution.
The headland of Berry Head near the town has been the site of artillery guns during several conflicts to protect Royal Navy ships taking on supplies at Brixham harbour. Berry Head is now a nature reserve and contains some of the best preserved Napoleonic forts in the country.
During World War II Brixham was once again home to artillery emplacements. The Brixham Batteries are now a scheduled heritage site and are one of only seven Emergency Coastal Defence Batteries set up in 1940 that still remain intact. American forces also left from Brixham for the D-Day landings.
Today Brixham remains a prominent fishing town with most activity centred around the harbour. Fresh fish is brought in daily to the town’s famous Fish Market and Brixham is part of England’s Seafood Coast. The high quality seafood caught at Brixham is served in some of the best restaurants locally and internationally and visitors to the town can enjoy a huge variety of seafood.
