Bustling about in Burnham-On-Sea
The seaside town of Burnham-On-Sea in Somerset is situated at the mouth of the River Parrett, upon Bridgwater Bay. The town was a small fishing village until the 18th century when it rose in popularity as a seaside resort. History and people
Burnham-On-Sea derives its name from the Old English words ‘Burna’ which means “stream” and “Hamm” which refers to an enclosure. The name describes the town perfectly and the ‘On-Sea’ was added later to distinguish it from other locations with a similar name.
Being situated where the Bristol Channel meets the Somerset Levels left Burnham-On-Sea very vulnerable to flooding. Sea defences and land reclamation has been going on since Roman times and the town was seriously affected by the Bristol Channel floods of 1607.
The history of land reclamation around Burnham-On-Sea began with the Romans who set up a system of drainage to help maintain the waterways for ships. This system fell into disrepair after the end of Roman occupation and the land soon returned to tidal salt flats.
The Gore Sands just off the coast of Burnham-On-Sea can be exposed during low tides and have been the site of many shipwrecks over the centuries. There are several prominent lighthouses along the coast and the original, the Round Tower, was built in the 14th century. Before that time a light atop the tower of St Andrews Church was used to warn off ships.
The Round Tower Lighthouse was eventually replaced in the 19th century by the low wooden pile lighthouse on the beach and the High Lighthouse. Around the same time as the new lighthouses the town also received its first lifeboat.
The Burnham-On-Sea railway station was built in 1958 and in the same year a stone pier was constructed as part of the railway line. The railway operated steamer boats from the pier for a while, using the structure as an exchange between the river and railway. A second pier made of concrete was built before 1914 and is believed to be the shortest pier in Britain.
The town’s flood defences continued to be improved and expanded over the years. A wall was built early in the 20th century and following serious flooding in 1981 a large, curved concrete wall was added in 1988. This latest defence runs along the Esplanade and is a canvas for a variety of street art.
Today Burnham-On-Sea remains a popular seaside resort with miles of golden sand beaches and many attractions to keep visitors entertained.
