History and lore
The city’s history stretches back thousands of years with archaeological evidence of settlements nearby as early as 6000 BC. Iron Age structures were located within present-day Cardiff, including Caerau Hillfort and until the Roman conquest the region was controlled by the Celtic Silures tribe.
The Romans originally built an extensive settlement near the mouth of the River Taff and later constructed a large fort over the site. Over time a large civilian settlement grew alongside the military outpost until the last Roman Legions left toward the end of the 4th century.
After the end of Roman rule, Wales divided into small kingdoms until the Norman Invasion in 1066. Cardiff Castle grew from the keep of the old Roman fort and has been the heart of the city ever since. The Castle as we know it today has been extensively altered and extended over the centuries but some of the original Roman work can still be seen.
Cardiff grew around the important castle and served as an administrative centre for the area in the Middle Ages. By the 13th century Cardiff was the largest town in Wales, becoming an important trading port.
The city has faced a number of disasters in its past including fires, floods, pirates and armed conflict. The Battle of St Fagans took place nearby during the English Civil War when Parliamentarian forces won a victory over the Royalists.
In the 19th century Cardiff docks were developed by John Crichton-Steward, known as the ‘Creator of modern Cardiff’. The town developed into the centre of the Welsh coal trade and attracted so many new workers that it almost doubled in size every decade.
Cardiff received city status in 1905 and began to rapidly develop into a cultural centre. At around the same time Cardiff docks suffered as a result of the Welsh coal trade declining. In World War II the city was damaged during the Cardiff Blitz when it was repeatedly bombed by the Luftwaffe.
In 1955 Cardiff became the capital city of Wales and in recent decades the city has undergone a variety of development and improvement projects. Today Cardiff is a vibrant commercial, cultural and sporting hotspot as well as a major tourist centre. the city was also ranked sixth in the world in National Geographic alternative tourist destinations of 2011.
