All around the town
Dawlish takes its name from the old Welsh for “Black Stream” and early settlers were drawn to the area because of the fertile land.
There is evidence of ancient settlements a mile inland from where Dawlish sits today. Before the town itself was founded, fishermen and salt makers travelled down to the outlet of Dawlish Waters to make their living. The unpredictable nature of the stream and occasional floods made the work sometimes difficult and the practice came to an end during the Anglo-Saxon period.
The town remained a small fishing port for much of its history with locals making their living from the sea. This changed rapidly at the end of the 18th century when summertime trips to the seaside became a popular pastime. Doctors of the era promoted the benefits of sea air and taking in the waters and King George III made nearby Weymouth his summer holiday residence, attracting more visitors to the area.
At the beginning of the 19th century the land between the town and the sea was significantly redeveloped. The stream was straightened with small waterfalls built into the Dawlish Waters along with a broad lawn and rows of new houses. Over two hundred years later this new layout remains largely unchanged.
Dawlish was linked to the railway network in 1846, bringing increased trade and tourism to the already popular seaside resort. The line ran along the seafront and Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed it to cross Dawlish Waters on a granite viaduct. The train line can still be viewed from the beach to this day.
The town is also famous for its literary connections. Jane Austin holidayed in Dawlish in 1802 and mentions the town several times in her 1811 novel, Sense and Sensibility. The Protagonist of Charles Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby inherits a small farm near Dawlish and the poet John Keats wrote a poem titled Dawlish Fair.
Today Dawlish remains a popular resort, attracting visitors far and wide to its traditional seaside delights and spectacular views.
