You simply won’t believe
Dorchester’s origins stretch back to prehistoric times with the remains of a large, Iron Age fort nearby. The area was home to different tribes who were defeated by the Roman invaders during the 1st century. The Romans established a military presence that eventually grew into the town of Durnovaria, the original name for Dorchester.
Durnovaria developed into an important market town and staging area. The remains of the Roman walls from this period can still be seen today and there have been a number of archaeological finds including thousands of Roman coins as well as jewellery and the aqueduct that supplied the town.
After the withdrawal of the Romans, Dorchester remained in British hands although there were Viking raids in the 8th century. During the Norman conquest a castle was built at Dorchester and a priory was founded in the 14th century. But it wasn’t until the late medieval period that the town became prominent again, growing into an important trading centre with a large textile industry.
The town was at the heart of Puritan emigration to America in the 17th century. Local rector, John White organised the settlement of Dorchester, Massachusetts. The first attempts to establish a sustainable colony at Cape Ann failed but after the creation of the Massachusetts Bay Company hundreds of colonists travelled to America.
Catholic chaplain Hugh Green was executed at Dorchester just before the English Civil War. The town was a Parliamentarian stronghold during the war but a Royalist force of two thousand soldiers took control and held Dorchester for some time before it could be recaptured.
During World War I a prisoner of war camp was built at Dorchester to house German prisoners. And near the end of the Second World War the Dorset regiment were the first soldiers to enter the town of Bayeux in 1944.
Since then Dorchester has developed a number of attractions to please visitors to this picturesque town. There are several museums and historic sites as well as the Dorchester Festival and the town’s football and rugby union clubs.
