Ely is a Cathedral town in Cambridgeshire and is built on Kimmeridge Clay Island which is the highest land in the Fens. The Abbey there was destroyed by raiding Danes in 870 and then rebuilt in 970 by Aethelwold, the bishop of Winchester in 970. A great deal of the Fenland is still mainly agricultural due to the richness of the peat which was used to convert the marshes to inhabitable land. Located just 80 miles from London, Ely is situated in a nice area to get away from the city without having to go too far.
