The section of Devon coast where Exmouth stands has a long history that can be traced back to the Triassic period, 250 million years ago. The UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site begins at Orcombe Point in Exmouth and stretches down to Old Harry Rocks in Dorset.
More recently, the town appears on Tabula Peutingeriana, an ancient map believed to be a copy of a Roman Era record from the 4th century. Byzantine coins have also been recovered from the beach in 1970.
Exmouth of today grew out of two settlements, Littleham and Withycombe Raleigh that date back to pre-Saxon times. The town itself takes its name from the location on the mouth or the River Exe which is itself derived from an ancient Celtic word.
There have been landing places for boats near Exmouth for centuries and more permanent docks were built at different times through the town’s history. Exmouth grew slowly at first as the harsh, exposed position of the estuary made settlement difficult. But that changed in the 13th century after the construction of a windmill and ferry docks to take advantage of the location.
The Elizabethan explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, famous for his voyages to South America and popularising tobacco in England, often sailed from Exmouth Harbour.
The harbour and city
In the 17th century the area was attacked by pirates who ravaged the Devon and Cornwall coastlines. These pirates raided villages and ships to capture people for sale as slaves.
Exmouth established itself in the 18th century as the first holiday resort in Devon. The medicinal properties of salt water was promoted by Victorian Doctors and tourists flocked to coastal towns like Exmouth.
The town had many notable visitors including Lady Byron and her daughter Ada Lovelace. Exmouth was also home to Lady Nelson, estranged wife of Admiral Nelson. After the railways connected Exmouth to the rest of the country in 1861 the town experienced another tourism boom as thousands traveled to the beautiful seaside resort.
