History and other notable things
The name of the town used to be spelt as two separate words, Fern Down, but this changed in the 19th century. The phrase ‘Fern Down’ is likely derived from ‘Fiergen’ the Anglo-Saxon word for a wooded hill. The name is a very fitting description for the area which is still filled with sprawling woodlands to this day.
Ferndown was a relatively small community for much of its history with locals making a living from the woodland and heath. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the town grew in prominence after the arrival of William and David Stewart in 1864. The Stewart family from Dundee set up a nursery in the town to grow plants that they were unable to grow in the cooler conditions of their original site.
The town expanded around this new business, developing into one of the largest communities in Dorset. The Stewart Family were groundbreaking entrepreneurs, developing many firsts in the horticultural industry. They were the first to establish a mail order catalogue to sell their wares and the first to grow and transport plants in pots. They also founded the first garden centre which was opened in Ferndown in 1955.
During World War II, Ferndown was home to one of the Auxiliary Units. These soldiers were an elite and highly secretive unit tasked with using irregular warfare to combat enemy forces in the event of a successful Nazi invasion.
After the end of the war, Ferndown began to attract visitors again as tourists returned to nearby coastal towns like Bournemouth and Poole. Ferndown Zoo opened in 1947 and helped draw visitors to the town with its selection of bears, leopards and monkeys as well as star attraction, Ajax the lion. Although the Zoo closed down in the latter half of the 20th century, the town’s beautiful surroundings and location at the heart of Dorset’s many attractions still makes it a popular tourist destination.
