Great Yarmouth: It’s a great place
Great Yarmouth or as it’s known locally, Yarmouth is a coastal town situated at the mouth of the River Yare just east of Norwich. Used as a gateway between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea, it has been a seaside resort area since the 1700s. Great Yarmouth is near the Roman Fort Camp of Gariannonum and was settled by fisherman from the Cinque Ports. In 1101, the The Church of St Nicholas was founded by Herbert de Losinga, the first Bishop of Norwich.
Yarmouth is actually much older than Norwich and figured prominently in Daniel Defoe’s travel journals, who likened it to Marseilles.
During the French Revolutionary wars, it was the main supply base for the North Sea Fleet. In World War I, Yarmouth suffered the first aerial bombing in the United Kingdom. Flooding to the area has been a longstanding problem and even as recent as 2013, people have had to be evacuated due to possible floods in the area.
