Before the 7th century the area where Hereford now stands was under the control of the minor Welsh kingdom of Ergyng. This ended with the expansion of Saxon territories although modern day Herefordshire still retains many place names of Welsh origin.
Hereford became the Saxon capital of West Mercia by the beginning of the 8th century and the town grew steadily as it attracted trader. In 760 the Battle of Hereford occurred as Welsh and Anglo-Saxon forces clashed after decades of hostilities.
As you would expect from a prominent town on the borders of West Mercia and Wales, Hereford was home to a grand castle. Hereford Castle was first built in the middle of the 11th century but was destroyed when the town was attacked by the Welsh in 1056.
During their conflict with Edward the Confessor, the Welsh forces and their Viking allies torched Hereford, destroying many buildings. But Hereford endured and its castle was rebuilt and went on to become one of the largest in England.
Hereford Castle was used by King Henry IV as a base for his campaigns into Wales, but the castle went into decline in the centuries that followed. By the end of the 17th century most of the castle had been destroyed or dismantled and the stone used for other buildings in the city. The site was eventually transformed into Castle Green which was once the bailey of the original castle.
Hereford’s incredible Gothic Cathedral was constructed in the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Ethelbert the King. Ethelbert is said to have been executed just four miles from Hereford and his body entombed at the site of the modern Cathedral.
During the Civil War the city was held by Parliamentarians and Royalists at different times. In the year 1945 Hereford was hotly contested with the city’s garrison and militia resisting a besieging army. The city’s coat of arms was later augmented by King Charles to show his gratitude to the city’s defenders.
Over the years
Over the years Hereford has remained an important trading city and is still a centre for commerce and trade today. Hereford also has a long tradition of alcohol manufacturing and several major breweries have their home in the city which is a global centre for cider production.
