History and lore
Honiton as we know it today was originally an important stopping point along the Foss Way, the Roman Road linking Exeter and Lincoln. But there is archaeological evidence to suggest that the area where the town stands has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The large hill fort of Hembury Castle originated in the Iron Age and stood near the town.
The Domesday Book of 1086 records Honiton as “Honetone,” meaning a farm belonging to Huna. The town grew to become a thriving market town as well as a centre for lace, pottery and glove making.
During the Medieval period, Honiton was a significant part of the country’s cloth industry. Lace making was first brought to the town in the 16th century and the trade grew rapidly. Lace at the time was usually manufactured by women working from rural cottages with Honiton acting as a trading centre were lace was received and sold.
In 11841, lace makers from around Honiton supplied lace for Queen Victoria’s wedding dress. The queen then commissioned more lace from Honiton for her eldest son’s christening robe.
The local lace industry began to decline after the introduction of machine made lace. The new processes were cheaper and faster than the traditional, highly skilled and labour intensive hand-made methods.
During the 18th century the town was devastated by fire and many of the original buildings were destroyed. The appearance of Honiton today is dominated by Victorian and Georgian architecture is the result of extensive rebuilding after the disaster.
One of the oldest surviving buildings in town is the 13th century chapel next to St Paul’s Church. The chapel survived multiple fires and has been used as a school room as well as a place of worship. Today the building is home to Allhallows Museum.
After the decline of the lace industry agriculture became one of the largest employers in the area, making use of the rich farmland along the River Otter. Tourism is also an important part of the town’s economy and Honiton has developed a reputation for antiques and antiquarian books in recent years. The beautiful countryside, historic sites and antiques help attract visitors from far and wide to this picturesque market town.
