Ipswich is regarded as one of England’s oldest continuously inhabited towns. The area was an important trade route during Roman occupation with the largest Roman villa in Suffolk built at Castle hill and a large fort at Walton. But the Ipswich we know today originated in the Anglo-Saxon period.
The Ipswich dock experienced significant growth during the 7th century as a trade and communication point between Britain and the continent. Many historic artifacts have been recovered from this time, including the nearby ship-burial and treasure of the Sutton Hoo find which is believed to be the grave of King Readwald. Replicas of these treasures can be found at Ipswich Museum along with other Anglo-Saxon items.

The general area

The Ipswich dock experienced significant growth during the 7th century as a trade and communication point between Britain and the continent. Many historic artefacts have been recovered from this time, including the nearby ship-burial and treasure of the Sutton Hoo find which is believed to be the grave of King Readwald. Replicas of these treasures can be found at Ipswich Museum along with other Anglo-Saxon items.
Over the next two hundred years Ipswich developed into a major trade centre but at the end of the 9th century the town was invaded by Vikings. The invaders occupied the town for years, fortifying their position before they were finally forced out.
The town remained a major trading centre, continuing to transport goods around the world. By the 17th century Ipswich was also a centre of emigration to New England during the period known as the Great Migration. Many travellers from East Anglian towns headed from Ipswich docks to the Massachusetts Bay Colony where the town of Ipswich Massachusetts was founded.
Ipswich also has a noteworthy place in literary history. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about the merchants of the town in his Canterbury Tales. Charles Dickens resided in Ipswich for a time and used the town as the setting for his novel The Pickwick Papers.
In the Victorian era Ipswich developed a reputation for fine breweries. The Trolly Cobbold brewery was built in the 18th century and had a base of operation in the town for over two hundred years. To this day there are still breweries in the area, many of which can be toured.
After the outbreak of World War I, Ipswich was bombed by German Zeppelins and further air raids occurred during World War II. Eighty civilians were killed during these bombings and the docks suffered heavy damage.

As you might expect from a town with such a strong focus on arts and culture, Ipswich is not short of theatres or art galleries. There are traditional theatres like the New Wolsey Theatre and Regent Theatre where visitors can enjoy plays, musicals and comedy in elegant surroundings. But Ipswich also offers more adventurous performances from the Red Rose Chain Theatre who perform in a building on Gippeswyk Avenue as well as an outdoor theatre in the forest.
The many art galleries in town include the Town Hall Galleries and John Russell Art Gallery. Take a look around to explore the works of local talents and perhaps be inspired to create something yourself.
With historical sights all around you, visit Ipswich Museum and look back at the town’s past through a series of displays and artefacts including replicas of treasures from the Sutton Hoo find. And there’s much more history to be found for those with an interest in the past. Young and old alike will enjoy a trip to Christchurch Mansion or the Ipswich Transport Museum.
