Kessingland has a long history stretching back to the Neolithic period. Ancient implements have been uncovered nearby and the prominent location between two rivers drew people to the area to take advantage of the bountiful fish.
Romans and Vikings have had settlements in the area, using it as a base as they extended their influence further inland. Kessingland itself was first recorded in the Domesday Book where it was noteworthy as an important fishing and farming community.
The success of the fisheries at Kessingland made it one of the wealthiest villages in the 11th century. This hard work and skill was reflected in the village itself which included several larger estates and manors as well as dozens of cottages.
For centuries the village consisted of two separate communities, Kessingland and Kessingland Beach Village. The coastal section was home to fishermen’s cottages and during the Victorian era holiday homes and chalets were added to accommodate visitors. It wasn’t until the 1960s that new housing developments united the village into a continuous whole, although the two halves remain distinct with the Beach displaying more eccentric architecture.
Being on the coast was not without its dangers as a section of Kessingland Beach Village known as Sea Row was swept away by the ocean. In the 19th century famous writer Rider Haggard was concerned by erosion along the coast and planted marram grass which is believed to have saved the beach from receding further. Today Kessingland is one of few places along the East Anglian coast where the beach is actually growing instead of wearing away.
During World War II Kessingland was part of the British coastal defences intended to deal with amphibious attack. A series of concrete pillboxes were constructed along the beaches. Some of these pillboxes have survived and can still be seen today if visitors take a short walk along the beach.
In recent years Kessingland has developed a reputation as a resort village, attracting visitors who enjoy boating, the beautiful coastal views and the large, unspoiled beaches. Kessingland also has the distinction of being the most easterly village in the UK.
