All about the town
Kingsteignton was founded near the start of the 8th century by the kings of Wessex. The original village was created as the centre of a Saxon estate which stretched from Teignmouth to Manaton. Kingsteignton was a royal vill, an administrative centre in Anglo Saxon times that was frequently visited by the king and royal household as they toured their kingdoms.
The food and goods supplied to the royal household by Kingsteignton made the village a target for Danish raiders who attacked in 1001. Viking raids along the coast were common in the build up to the Danish invasion in the following decade.
In addition to its importance as an administrative and trading hub, Kingsteignton developed into a significant centre for the clay industry. By the 15th century the village prospered and the parish church was rebuilt with an eighty-five foot tower. The church held the vital role of mother church of the region until the 19th century.
By the Middle Ages Kingsteignton had outgrown the Honeywell Spring so the Fairwater Leat was dug to supply the town. As well as becoming the community’s primary water source, the Leat also powered the local mills.
A drought during this period is believed to be the origin of the town’s annual Ram Roasting Fair. Legends say that there was insufficient water to baptise a child so a ram was sacrificed to the gods of the local spring. The water started to flow and a ram has been roasted each year to commemorate the event. The Ram Roasting Fair was traditionally held on Whit Tuesday but was later moved to the late May bank holiday to fit in with school holidays.
The unusual geology of the area gave rise to deposits of fine quality ball clay in the Dovey Basin. This sedimentary formation lies between Bovey Tracey and Newton Abbot near Kingsteignton and has been the source of the town’s clay for centuries. In 1791 Josiah Wedgwood first started purchasing Kingsteignton clay and the clay mining industry has continued to flourish to this day.
In 1890 a fire broke out at Upper Sandygate in Kingsteignton and eight houses were destroyed after the fire engine from nearby Newton Abbots couldn’t put out the blaze. Thankfully nobody was killed but more than forty people lost their homes in the disaster.
Kingsteignton was considered to be England’s largest village until 2009 when it achieved town status. Today the town retains much of it’s friendly, village atmosphere which helps attract visitors looking to enjoy the peaceful setting.
