History and other things of interest
Midsomer Norton’s name comes from the Old English “Norton” which means ‘north enclosure’. “Midsomer” possibly refers to the town’s location midway between two branches of the River Somer although there is some disagreement over the true meaning.
There have been settlements in the area for hundreds of years. But Midsomer Norton started to rally develop in the 13th century after it received a royal charter to host weekly markets. A second royal charter soon followed, granting the right to hold a fayre on midsummer’s day and some believe that Midsomer Norton’s name refers to this midsummer fayre.
The Midsomer Norton Knight is a tomb effigy carving from the 13th or 14th centuries which once stood atop a tomb at St John the Baptist Church. The tomb was destroyed in the Victorian Era but the statue survived and the Midsomer Norton Knight can now be found at Bristol City Museum.
Midsomer Norton was the commercial centre for the Somer Valley and in the 18th century it grew rapidly with the increased mining in the Somerset Coalfield. A number of small pits opened nearby and Midsomer Norton developed into an industrial town.
In the 19th century the town was connected to the railway network and more pits were opened. Coal mining remained the main industry until the Norton Hill Pit closed in the 1960s and the print industry became the largest employer in town.
Midsomer Norton has had a number of famous residents over the years including singer Anita Harris who was born there and author Roald Dahl who sold kerosene in the town during the 1930s. And Evelyn Waugh’s family lived in Midsomer Norton and he remembered the town fondly after spending his summer holidays there.
Today Midsomer Norton continues to thrive as a commercial hub, providing shops and services to the surrounding areas. It remains the principal market town in the Somer Valley as it has for hundreds of years. The town also has a prominent music scene, being home to a number of music venues and bands as well as hosting classical and choir concerts.
