History and news
It is believed that the name Nailsea is derived from the Old English phrase for “Naegl’s Island”. And much of the history of Nailsea is shrouded in mystery before the start of the coal mining industry. Although there is some evidence that the Romans extracted pennant sandstone from quarries in the area and there was a roman Villa to the north.
In the15th century Nailsea Court was constructed to the southwest of the town. This Elizabethan manor house has had many prominent owners over the years, including Nathaniel Wade who supported the Duke of Monmouth during the Monmouth Rebellion. After the Duke’s defeat, Wade was condemned to death but later pardoned and returned home to Nailsea.
The economy of Nailsea focused heavily on coal mining which began in the 16th century but there may have been small scale mining happening before that. There is a record of coal mined from Nailsea being used in Yatton in the year 1507 and by the 18th century the town had multiple pits nearby and the majority of workers were part of the coal mining industry. Around this time the town was visited by social reformer Hannah More who founded a Sunday school for the workers, one of her many philanthropic works.
The remains of many old pits are still visible today but the 18th century Elms Colliery is the most prominent. The colliery is one of the best examples left in England although it is now in disrepair and part of the Heritage at Risk Register due to the potential for further decay and vandalism. The site has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument and stands as a reminder of the important coal mining industry in the region.
Nailsea grew around the success of the coal mines which also attracted glass manufacturer John Robert Lucas who established Nailsea Glassworks in 1788. The glassworks was the fourth largest in the country and made use of local coal as well as other nearby raw materials such as sand and lime.
The glassworks mostly produced low grade bottle glass but they also made decorative “Nailsea” glass which is still sought after by collectors around the world. After the coal mines closed down the glassworks followed in 1873.
Today the town remains a vibrant community. There are a number of tourist attractions nearby and Nailsea also hosts an annual carnival as well as a beer and cider festival.
