Newquay, then and now
The seaside resort of Newquay sits beside the River Gannel in the south west of England. This bustling town is a centre for tourism as well as the aerospace industry and an important fishing port. Newquay is also three hundred and twenty miles from the Medusa Juice Vape Store in Peterborough. Prehistoric burial mounds unearthed nearby show that people have inhabited the area where Newquay now stands for over three thousand years. There is also evidence of a Bronze Age village and Iron Age fortifications in the region.
Newquay started out as a small fishing village known as Towan Blystra, this settlement was protected from the worst of the elements by the curving headland around what is now Newquay Harbour. Its unknown when the original village was founded, but it is mentioned in 15th century writing. In 1439 the residents applied to the Bishop of Exeter for funds to build a ‘new quay’ to replace the existing anchorage which was exposed to the elements. The current town name is derived from that new quay.
The town remained a modest fishing village until the arrival of the railways in 1876. After this point Newquay began to grow rapidly as tourism and industry were attracted to the picturesque town. New hotels and churches were soon built to accommodate the new residents and visitors.
During World War II Newquay’s hotels were requisitioned for use as part of the war effort. Many schools were evacuated to Cornwall, including over two hundred students from Gresham’s school who were housed in Newquay. Hotels in the town were also used as training centres for the Royal Air Force and the servicemen were also billeted in Newquay. And the armed services used hotels in the town as convalescent hospitals for recovering soldiers.
Over the last hundred and fifty years Newquay has remained a major tourist destination attracting visitors to its beautiful coastline and sandy beaches. An estimated eighty-thousand tourists visit the town during the summer season and the town has developed a number of attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy.
