The History of Poole
The area where pool is situated has been inhabited since the 3rd century BC when the Durotriges Celts moved there. The invading Romans landed at Poole in the 1st AD when they took over an iron age settlement in the area.
Part of the Kingdom of Wessex during Anglo-Saxon times, the settlement at Poole was used for fishing and the natural harbour a place for ships to anchor on their way to the River Frome. Poole suffered two large Viking attacks, the first in 876 AD and the second in 1015 AD. After this second invasion, King Canute used Poole as a base to pillage and raid Wessex and begin his conquest of England.
After the Norman invasion of England in the 11th century, Poole grew in importance as a port town until it was awarded staple port status by King Henry VI in 1433. This recognition enabled Poole to construct a town wall and begin exporting wool, further boosting the town’s economy.
Poole sided with the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War due to the town’s puritan stance and opposition to the ship money tax introduced by King Charles I. Avoiding any significant attacks from Royalist forces, Poole’s Parliamentarian militia laid siege to and captured the nearby Royalist stronghold at Corfe Castle.
After the founding of the North American colonies in the New World, Poole established successful commercial trade with the colonies. Trade grew steadily with ships sailing to Newfoundland with salt and previsions then carrying dried and salted fish to continental Europe before returning to Poole with wine, olive oil and salt. The success of this trade route founded the development of the town and modern day Poole still retains many of the Georgian buildings constructed in this period.
British dominance of the Newfoundland fisheries trade ended after the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Trade in Pool declined during this time before the town experienced rapid growth again during the industrial revolution.
By the start of the 19th century ninety percent of the workforce in Poole were employed in harbour activities. But during the Victorian era as ship sizes increased, becoming too large for the shallow harbour and Poole lost business to the deep water ports at Liverpool, Southampton and Plymouth. With the introduction of the railways, Poole benefited from the tourist attracted to nearby villages and towns.
Poole had an important role to play during World War II. The third largest embarkation point for the D-Day landings, American troops left from Poole for Omaha Beach on the 6th of June 1944. The coastal town also served as a base for supplies to the allied forces in Europe after the Normandy landings.
