The name Redruth is derived from the original Cornish name ‘Rhyd-ruth’ meaning Red Ford and the original settlement was built around a crossing point in the river. Camborne takes its name from ‘Kammbornn’, the Cornish word for a crooked hill.
The history of Redruth and Camborne can be traced back to the Roman occupation with the ruins of what is believed to be a Roman Villa found near Camborne. This is the only Roman Villa to be uncovered in the whole of Cornwall. Redruth began as a village formed around the ford in the 12th century, where the miners stayed while extracting metal ores from nearby shallow deposits of tin and copper. The mining of these metal ores turned the colour of the river red which is how the settlement got its name.
Both Redruth and Camborne were historic market towns with most of their industry focused on mining. And although mining in the area steadily increased over time it wasn’t until the 19th century that Cornish copper mines experienced a massive increase in demand. Up until that point tin had been the focus of mining in the area but copper was needed for brass which was quickly becoming an essential metal for the Industrial Revolution.
With this increased demand, Redruth and Camborne quickly grew into one of the largest mining regions in Britain. Two-thirds of the population worked in the mining industry and the towns were home to dozens of smiths and a foundry as well as a gasworks producing flammable gas. Both towns were connected to the growing railway network during the Victorian era when metal and ore were transported far and wide from the mines in the area.
Holman Brothers, a mining equipment manufacturer founded in Camborne in 1801 became the largest manufacturer of industrial equipment in Cornwall. At their height the company employed over three thousand people in Camborne and during World War II they produced the anti-aircraft Holman Projector used by the Royal Navy as well as the Sten submachine gun for a time.
Disused stacks and engine houses still remain in the region, but the mining industry declined toward the end of the 19th century. Many miners emigrated to new mining communities in the Americas, Australia and South Africa and Cornwall’s last fully operational mine, located between Redruth and Camborne, closed in 1998.
