This region of the South coast has been inhabited since the stone age. After the Roman occupation, the Anglo-Saxons built a settlement located in what is now the St Mary’s area of Southampton. This new settlement was originally known as Hamwic and this name later evolved into Hampton which is where the county of Hampshire gets its name. After the Norman Conquest, Southampton was a major port between England and Normandy. The remains of buildings from this era can be seen today, including fragments of Southampton Castle, merchants’ houses and a 13th century Franciscan friary.
After the town was sacked by French, Genoese and Monegasque ships in the 14th century, King Edward III ordered that the town be heavily fortified. Much of the walls, towers and gates built at this time still survive to this day.
This and that
In the 15th century God’s House Tower, the first purpose built artillery tower in England ,was constructed as part of Southampton’s City walls. The city was also the point of departure for the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower before heading on to Plymouth and then the New World.
Southampton was an important military embarkation point during the Crimean War, the Boer War and the first and second World Wars. And during this period of history Southampton also became a spa town and tourist destination with bath houses being built to take advantage of the reported medical benefits of sea bathing.
Like many industrial and port towns, Southampton grew rapidly during the Victorian era. Between the building of new docks and the railway link to London opened in the 1840s, Southampton became known as The Gateway to the Empire. People flocked to the town which was famous for its beautiful scenery and range of retail.
Of course the history of Southampton will always include the infamous RMS Titanic. This colossal passenger liner set sale from Southampton in 1912 with eighty percent of its crew being locals of Southampton. Today a memorial stands in the city, dedicated to the engineers who remained at their posts so that others might live.
The Spitfire fighter aircraft was designed and developed in Southampton before seeing heavy use in World War II. The city was a target of Luftwaffe bombings during the war with hundreds being killed and thousands injured.
