Taunton’s name is derived from Tone Town meaning town on the river Tone. The area was home to Bronze and Iron age settlements followed by farms and villages during the Roman Occupation. By the Anglo-Saxon period, Taunton was a very significant fortified town with its own mint.
In the early 8th century, King Ine of Wessex constructed a castle in the area but it was destroyed two decades later to prevent it falling into rebel hands. Historic Taunton was also a significant religious location and a monastery was founded during the 10th century. And the Domesday Survey recorded the town as having a large population.
The town is no stranger to war. During the War of the Roses Taunton was the location of a skirmish and in the Second Cornish Uprising of 1697 a 6,000 strong Cornish army advanced on the town. The attacking force was intercepted by an army of King Henry VII who received the surrender of the remaining Cornish soldiers in Taunton before ordering the execution of the ringleaders.
During the Civil war in the 17th century, the town changed hands several times. Taunton Castle was defended for twelve months during the Siege of Taunton, with the town suffering severe damages. Toward the end of the 17th century the Duke of Monmouth crowned himself King of England at Taunton during the short lived West Country Rebellion.
In World War II Taunton was a part of plans to halt any attempted Nazi Invasions. Bridgewater and Taunton Canal was part of the Taunton Stop Line, a fifty mile line of defensive positions including machine-gun pillboxes. The Taunton Stop Line was one of many similar lines designed to stop the advancement of Nazi troops and light armoured vehicles in the event of a land invasion. Thankfully they were not needed during the war, but many of the pillboxes can still be seen today.
