The name of Teignmouth means exactly what it sounds like, “the mouth of the river Teign”. The town was originally two villages known as East and West Teignmouth which were separated by the Tame stream.
Teignmouth is first recorded in the 11th century but there is evidence of settlements before that. Saxons controlled the area since the 7th century and a battle was fort between Ancient Britons and Saxons at Haldon, a short distance to the north. Teignmouth was also one of the coastal towns attacked by Danish raiders during the 11th century.
The villages of East and West Teignmouth both received charters to hold markets in the 13th. And by the 14th century Teignmouth had grown into a significant port, the second largest in Devon.
Like other ports, Teignmouth struggled with dangers, including treacherous weather and raids from enemy ships. During the 14th century the town was attacked by the French and locals retaliated, sending seven ships against Calais. In the 17th century Teignmouth suffered raids by Flemish Privateers as well as another attack from the French fleet. This invasion of one thousand men resulted in over a hundred houses being burned down and pillaged and was the last invasion of England by a foreign power.
Smuggling and privateering were popular trades in Teignmouth around the 17th and 18th centuries with illegal goods making up a significant part of the town’s economy. Two privateer ships operated out of the town carrying more than thirty guns and a hundred men between them.
The fisheries remained the largest employer in Teignmouth until the turn of the 19th century. At this time the fisheries started to decline but the town’s fortunes were quickly revitalised as it became popular with tourists.
Seaside resorts started to flourish at the start of the 19th century as doctors at the time advocated the health benefits of sea air and taking in the waters. And the Amazons of Shaldon, a group of muscular women who pulled fishing nets and were “naked to the knee” were an early attraction of the town.
During the Second World War Teignmouth was bombed over twenty times with seventy-nine people killed and over a hundred wounded. The town’s hospital was also hit during a raid, killing ten people inside.
The town recovered, the hospital was rebuilt and today Teignmouth remains a popular seaside destination for holiday makers. The picturesque town has spectacular views and the nearby attractions bring in visitors from far and wide.
