History and sites
Tiverton is located at the point where the River Exe and the River Lowman meet. And the town’s name is believed to derive from either “Twy-ford-ton” or “Twyverton”, which means “the town on two fords”.
The region where the town now stands has been home to settlements as far back as the stone age. Flint tools have been uncovered in the area, an Iron Age Hill Fort overlooks the town from Exeter Hill and the remains of a Roman encampment have been found nearby.
The Domesday Book records Tiverton as a commercial and administrative centre and King Henry I chose the town as the site for a new castle built in the 12th century. Tiverton Castle was improved over time and remained an important strategic location.
Tiverton’s industry was centred around the wool trade and the town grew rapidly during the 16th and 17th centuries. Successful wool merchants contributed to the building of churches, schools and almshouses in the town, many of which can still be seen today.
But the history of Tiverton was not without its difficulties. In the 17th century two major fires devastated the town, destroying most of the buildings. And during the English Civil War, Tiverton castle was besieged by Parliamentarians who overthrew the Royalists before moving on to the town itself, forcing out Tiverton’s defenders.
The town continued to enjoy growth and prosperity from the wool trade until the 18th century. Trade started to decline as a result of cheap, imported cotton and the expansion of industrialisation in other wool-producing towns. But Tiverton’s fortunes changed again in the 19th century with the rise of lace production in town as well as the opening of the canal and railway to boost trade.
During World War I Tiverton was one of many towns in the UK who’s industry was adapted to producing materials for the war. The Heathcote fabric factory manufactured lace at the same time as munitions and gas nets for the military. And during the Second World War the town was home to a POW camp which held German prisoners of war.
The Grand Western Canal from Tiverton to Lowdwells was opened in 1814 but fell into decline during the 20th century. A preservation Committee was formed in the 1960 and the restored canal is now a designated country park with horse-drawn tourist narrow boats operating out of Tiverton.
The Tiverton of today is filled by wonderful sights and remains an important commercial and administrative centre as it has been for centuries.
