Yeovil has a long history and archaeologists have found palaeolithic remains in the area. There are burial sites and settlements from this period and Bronze Age artefacts have been found nearby.
Yeovil is situated at the side of the River Yeo and was on a main Roman road to the South coast. Several Roman Villas stood nearby and there’s evidence of a small town from excavations at Westland Road. Coins from this era were unearthed in 1916 and a mosaic floor discovered a decade later.
The big war
There is no evidence of what happened in Yeovil during the Dark Ages, but we do know that a settlement was built there after Somerset was conquered by the Saxons. Yeovil takes its name from the River Yeo, named for the Saxon word meaning river. By the 11th century the town is described as a thriving market community.
During the Black Death in the 14th century, Yeovil lost half of its population when the pandemic ravaged Europe. Further disaster occurred a century later when a major fire destroyed many of the wooden, thatch roofed buildings in the town.
By the time of the Industrial Revolution, Yeovil was a manufacturing centre for the glove making industry. The population grew rapidly in this period as railways connected the town to the rest of the country. It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that the town gained borough status and had its first mayor.
Yeovil became dominated by the aircraft and defence industries by the start of the 20th century. This made it a target for German air raids during World War II and between 1940 and 1942 over a hundred high explosive bombs fell on the town. Almost fifty people were killed during these raids and thousands of homes were damaged.
